The family of the young man killed by a police officer in August in Marseille filed a complaint for "obstruction of the manifestation of the truth", according to a statement by their lawyer, who accuses the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) of having "deliberately botched" the investigation.
According to law enforcement, 19-year-old Souheil El Khalfaoui was in a parked car in a working-class district of central Marseille in August when police approached to check him and he backed up to attempt to escape, hitting an officer.
A peacekeeper would then have used his weapon, shooting at the level of the door and fatally hitting the young man.
"Concealments"
An investigation by the IGPN had concluded that the police officer had made "regulatory use" of his weapon.
On Tuesday, the Marseille prosecutor's office announced that it had requested an additional investigation, without specifying the reasons.
According to Me Arié Alimi, the new lawyer for the family of Souheil El Khalfaoui, it was the information he gathered during a "counter-investigation" that prompted the prosecution to make this decision.
“It is an admission of a sloppy, deliberately sloppy investigation, even which led to cover-ups,” said Arié Alimi during a press conference, repeating the position of the family according to which the young man was a victim “ intentional homicide”.
