After Reunion, hit by Cyclone Batisirai, it is New Caledonia's turn to be threatened by a tropical depression.

Cyclone alerts are triggered on the archipelago, which should be affected on Thursday.

The pre-alert was introduced from Wednesday noon throughout New Caledonia, before a gradual increase.

The maximum level 2 alert, which involves a halt to all activity and home confinement, will thus come into force at midnight local time (2 p.m. Wednesday in Paris) on the islands of Lifou and Maré, then Thursday at 8 a.m. in southern province, where Nouméa is located, and in three municipalities in the northern province, said the Directorate of Civil Security.

“The depression will affect us directly and continue to strengthen.

It will generate heavy rains of the order of 150 to 200 millimeters during the episode and gusty winds that can reach up to 130 km / h, "said Virgil Cavarero, head forecaster at Météo France, to the press. -NC.

The archipelago is already experiencing excess rainfall

The phenomenon, which will be in the state of a strong tropical depression when it hits the Caillou, was on Wednesday at the end of the day about 200 kilometers east of Lifou.

It is moving at a speed of 10 km / h and its trajectory should make it circulate between the southern tip of Grande-Terre and the Isle of Pines on Thursday after passing near Lifou and Maré, also indicated Météo France- CN.

This depression comes as New Caledonia is under the influence for the second consecutive year of the La Niña meteorological phenomenon, which leads to an increase in rainfall.

According to data released Tuesday by Météo France-NC, an annual excess of 50% rainfall over normal was recorded in 2021, making it the third wettest year since records began in 1970.
