The Hérault prefecture on Monday lifted the ban on the harvesting and marketing of shellfish from the Thau pond, with the exception of clams, after favorable analyzes on the search for toxins.

“Given the favorable results” on the “search for lipophilic toxins carried out (…) on mussels and oysters from the Thau pond, the prefect decided to lift the ban on fishing, collection, transport, purification, shipping, distribution and marketing for human consumption of these shellfish,” announced the Hérault prefecture.

The only restrictions remaining in force, “due to microbial contamination”, concern clams, the harvesting and marketing of which for human consumption remains prohibited.

These bans were put in place on January 21, due to the presence of toxins, caused by microscopic plants, phytoplankton, which are not destroyed by cooking.
