• Inspired by Canada, the "freedom convoy" is a movement launched by opponents of health measures.

  • For the past week, trucks and cars have been blocking the center of the Canadian capital, Ottawa.

  • This is what the French also want to do.

Some leave on Wednesday from their city, more or less far from the capital, to then join the anti-vaccine pass demonstration on Saturday in Paris.

The "freedom convoy" is activated in France.

This initiative launched in Canada by opponents of sanitary measures, has been blocking the center of the capital Ottawa for a week.

This is what thousands of people plan to do, nearly 278,000, according to the Facebook group "Le convoy de la liberté" on Saturday in Paris, arriving in convoys of heavy goods vehicles but also private vehicles to protest against the vaccine pass.

To arrive on time, several departures are planned from all over the country.

For the South-East, the trip begins in Nice, at 10 a.m., from the Carrefour Lingostière shopping center.

Objective, to reach Avignon at 7 p.m. where other “conveyors” from Marseille, Toulon or Montpellier will join them to continue their journey towards the capital.

A “citizen” organization

Not really “decision makers, nor really organizers.

People consult each other, talk to each other”, as indicated by “support” from Nice who “unfortunately will not be able to take the road”.

On the social network, several groups have been created and posts show a bit of confusion about schedules, places to meet with other group shares for more information.

It is difficult to know how many people will actually meet on Wednesday morning to leave.

Contacted, the prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes had no information on this subject Tuesday evening.

Victoire *, 57, who will be part of the procession, does not know either.

But she assures that bikers will lead the way and that “the thousands of Saturday protesters who cannot stop working for this event” will be there to support them at the start.

She is not afraid of the police, whether in Nice or Paris.

“All the people will be there, nothing can stop us”.

She adds: "With this citizens' initiative, we have created mutual aid, real solidarity", she underlines, affirming that, on the roads, "people will be there".

And organization level, she planned to be hosted for free until the final destination.

A convoy to Brussels

This former carer can no longer practice because of the vaccination pass.

She then “joined the movement” because she wants “for things to change, for us to be free again”.

"I don't find it normal to be forced to be vaccinated to have a job, to go to a restaurant, to do cultural activities, to simply live," she exclaims.

According to her, this “freedom convoy” is “global”.

"He's leaving Canada but we've been talking about doing something similar for a long time."

According to information communicated on the main Facebook group created on January 26, the "conveyors" should go to Brussels on February 14, where the protest against health measures is increasingly virulent.

Victoire, she “will go all the way”.

In Bern, Switzerland, the convoy was blocked and could not reach the town square.

The police, who were aware of the call made public on social networks, were ready and had blocked access beforehand.
