They were often thought to be absent from migration, sedentary, remaining in the country to wait for their husbands.

In 2020, women accounted for nearly half of the migrant population, according to the United Nations.

Hardening of family reunification policies, conjugal violence, desire for autonomy… The reasons for leaving are multiple for these women who, more and more, leave alone or with their children on the migratory routes.

Faced with gender-based violence, women are even more vulnerable than men during their journey and their situation does not necessarily improve when they arrive at their destination.
