A Man Without Will

by Marc Desaubliaux, published on January 26, 2022 by Éditions Des authors des livres

His favorite quote:

“I wander the streets for a long time and find myself a stone's throw from Parc Monceau when night has just set in.

My favorite moment of the day: the streetlights come on, the city continues its hectic life, even speeds it up as if it wanted to make the most of the time it had left before death.

Why this book?

  • Because I have always devoured the writings of Marc Desaubliaux,

and once again the reading did not disappoint me.

  • Because this book is not in line with what the author

has written so far: the difficulties of childhood and adolescence. Here, he describes young adults, some passages of which are quite raw around obsessions and sexual practices which are the fruit of frustrations and ill-being, sorts of stress relief just like drugs and alcohol, violence.

  • Because we are witnessing the drift of a lonely,

depressive young man, who does not know how to choose, who needs to be made for him, like this very dangerous journey that he will undertake in the USSR only because he won't dare say no to whoever asks him to. Often, Louis rears without any result, for lack of will against authority, for lack of compass; he fits into the mould, revolts again, wants and doesn't want. He loves and hates his environment. He lets off steam in painting, the prohibitions without ever succeeding because he does not know how to do it and has no benchmarks.

  • Because the author makes a very detailed psychological analysis of Louis,

allows us to ask ourselves many questions about what we are, about the extreme complexity of each of us, which refers to Freud's famous phrase "Being a bit of a master in self ".

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

In the years 1970-80”, a young bourgeois from Plaine Monceau had to succeed his stockbroker father.

But this perspective bores him, like everything else, except painting, music and his girlfriend, sassy, go-getter, ready to do anything to have fun.

He will follow her in games of depravity in which he still feels uncomfortable...

Characters.

Louis Puissonnier-Tavernier, the central character of the story.

Carole-Anne Aurevilly, photography student, daring, original.

Dimitri Romanov, Louis' one and only friend.

And many more to discover...

Places.

Mainly in Paris, the Haussmann neighborhoods near Parc Monceau.

But also the Château de Chézy, owned by the Puissonnier-Tavernier family for generations, on the banks of the Marne, not far from Meaux.

A bit of Normandy, Brittany, the USSR...

The time.

We are in the years 1978-80, when permissiveness was at its height.

It ends shortly after François Mitterrand comes to power.

But the time is of no great importance in the story.

The author.

Born in 1953 in Paris, in an old Parisian bourgeoise, Marc Desaubliaux is the author of seven novels including

An English Summer

 and

Two Boys Without Stories

.

This book was read with

the confirmation that the human being is terribly complex and darker than we think.

Marc Desaubliaux manages to finely describe the psychology of a lost young man who should have been helped in his youth in order to trace a path in life.
