Italy A 10-year-old boy dies from Covid-19 without serious previous pathologies
The drama of little
Lorenzo
, the 10-year-old boy who died this Tuesday in Italy from Covid, has set off all the alarms.
Although Covid does not generally manifest itself in serious forms in minors, more and more children of early ages are being admitted to hospitals.
In the last week in Italy, some 400 hospitalizations of children between the ages of 5 and 11 have been registered, almost half of the 834 admitted under the age of 19.
It is worrying, stresses
Annamaria Staiano
, president of the
Italian Pediatric Society
: "Hospitalizations in children between 5 and 11 years old have tripled this week compared to the previous week. The growth of the incidence rate is slowing down in all age groups except in that".
Is there any pathology for which vaccination in children is contraindicated?
"Even in vulnerable children, with multiple pathologies, vaccination is indicated. So much so that even in children with neurological diseases, immunodeficiencies, allergic problems or in immunosuppressive treatments, vaccination is recommended. And if in any doubt, it is necessary to discuss it with the pediatrician" .
What are the symptoms of Covid infection?
"As for the omicron variant, now prevalent, it manifests itself above all in the upper respiratory tract, therefore at the laryngeal level. Most children have a
runny nose
,
laryngitis
,
sore throat
and low-
grade fever
. Sometimes, these symptoms also are followed by
fever
and
severe cough
."
What complications can occur?
"
Covid
can be followed by complications such as
multisystem inflammatory syndrome
that may require hospitalization in intensive care because serious clinical manifestations can occur, such as
myocarditis
or
pericarditis
. But let's not forget that persistent Covid also occurs in children."
Are there children who are more at risk of developing serious illness?
What symptoms could they present?
"The course of disease from patient to patient is not predictable. Children who already have a respiratory disease, such as
severe asthma
, may be considered to be at higher risk. Symptoms that should be alarming are
persistent high fever
,
shortness of breath, or
cough .
persistent
."
How do children who have needed admission to the ICU evolve?
"The total deaths recorded in the report of
the Higher Institute of Health
are 38 in the range of 0-19 years, 39 with little Lorenzo. But there are children who were hospitalized in very serious situations in intensive care and later recovered. A general evolution cannot be established, fortunately, most of the children have been discharged and, therefore, this suggests that there may be a return to complete normality."
Can children be reinfected?
"Of course, even in children there can be a reinfection of
coronavirus
. In Italy there have been 17,507 reinfections out of 679,919 new positives between 0 and 19 years old, according to the latest official report."
Is the vaccine safe?
"Pharmacovigilance data from the
United States
, where more than nine million children between the ages of 5 and 11 have received a dose of the vaccine, confirm that the vaccine is safe and effective. Of 8.7 million doses administered between 3 November to December 19, only 0.05% of adverse events were reported, and almost none of the cases were serious. There were 11 myocarditis, seven of which were not serious and four remain under observation."
