On the premises of Heidelberg University, a person is said to have injured several people on Monday afternoon.
The Neuenheimer Feld in front of the gates of the old town is currently cordoned off.
Details were not initially known.
The police asked motorists to drive around the site so that rescue workers can drive freely.
