The Confederation of African Football (CAF) reacted to comments by Tom Saintfiet, coach of the Gambia team, before the round of 16 against Guinea.

The Belgian notably indicated that his players are six per room.

The Gambia coach's comments [are] unfortunate and devoid of any truth

 ," CAF said.

The Gambia Federation (GFF) has apologized to CAF and Cameroon.

The GFF assured that the statements of his coach were taken out of context.

The words of Tom Saintfiet at a press conference on January 23 in Bafoussam, before an eighth final of

CAN 2022

between his Gambia team and that of Guinea, did not go unnoticed.

In French, the Belgian

complained about the Gambians' accommodation conditions

, before a historic match for the Scorpions.

He indicates in particular "

that there are six players who sleep in the same room, with the same toilets and the same shower

".

The ex-coach of Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Malawi and Togo (among others) sees a lack of respect for small teams.

Relaunched later by Canal Plus Afrique on the subject, Tom Saintfiet did not want to add to it.

CAF rises up

These criticisms, however, made the Confederation of African Football (

CAF

) jump. "

There is NO truth to the allegations that 6 players share a room - it's just not true

," CAF protested.

We found the Gambia coach's comments to be unfortunate and devoid of any truth

." The governing body of African football adds: “

CAF and the [Local Organizing Committee] provide accommodation for all participating teams for a maximum of 40 people - costs covered. Maximum of two people sharing a room (standard practice anywhere - and all 24 teams are subject to it). If a delegation brings more than 40 people, it is responsible for the additional costs. The Gambia received the same benefits as the other teams.

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) has since

issued a statement

in an attempt to calm  things down

. However, what the coach meant was that at the aforementioned hotel there are apartments and in one of the apartments there is a main entrance with three separate bedrooms with two players in each of the rooms, the six being obliged to share simple toilets and bathrooms

, explains the GFF.

[Tom Saintfiet] expressed concern that in a tournament where CAF rules state that if a player tests positive for Covid-19, his roommate will automatically miss the upcoming game […].

Thus the fact that six players share sanitary facilities would therefore be a risk to the health of the players concerned.

In this regard, the coach's words were taken out of context and he in no way insinuated that six players shared a single room

 .

The Gambia Federation apologizes

Finally, she concludes: “

The GFF would like to apologize to the Local Organizing Committee and the Confederation of African Football as well as to any party or individual who may have been offended by the comments of the coach.

Neither the coach nor the Federation intends to sabotage the organization of a competition where we have sent the signal to the whole continent and to the world that we are a force to be reckoned with.

 “On to the game.
