Police in Poland have arrested a tourist from the Netherlands on the site of the former German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz.

According to the PAP news agency, the 29-year-old showed the Hitler salute for a photo in front of the main gate with the inscription "Work makes you free".

Her 30-year-old husband took the photo of her with her arm raised.

When guards from the memorial on the site of the former concentration camp noticed the scene, they called the police.

"The woman wanted to make the excuse that it was just a stupid joke," said the spokesman for the local police.

The public prosecutor imposed a fine, which the Dutchwoman accepted.

The name Auschwitz has become etched into consciousness around the world as a synonym for the Holocaust and the epitome of evil.

There alone, the National Socialists killed more than a million people, mostly Jews.

During the Shoah they murdered around six million Jews across Europe.
