At least 180 people are missing in the Democratic Republic of Congo after an overloaded wooden boat capsized on the Congo River earlier this week.

The accident happened in the night from Sunday to Monday in the province of Equateur - in the north-west of the country, as the police of the German Press Agency said on Friday.

The exact number of passengers is unclear, but authorities believe there were around 600 people on board at the time of the accident.

Some passengers could be rescued by other ships.

Such accidents happen again and again in the DR Congo, because in the country – with around 90 million people – many Congolese are dependent on boats as a means of transport due to the poor infrastructure.
