In less than 20 years, international adoption has completely collapsed, going from 45,500 children adopted abroad in 2004 to 6,500 in 2019.

In France only 244 international adoptions were carried out in 2020. Stricter national policies, development of contraception, improvement of reproductive techniques in the host countries... Several factors explain this downward trend.
Various scandals and abuses have also tainted the history of international adoption.
