The policeman who fatally injured one of the men whom the BRI had come to arrest on Wednesday in the center of Nice, told investigators that his shooting was "completely accidental", said the public prosecutor on Thursday.

Xavier Bonhomme also specifies that the police custody of this commander whom he describes as "experienced" "has just been extended".

The facts took place during a "judicial police operation aimed at arresting several individuals in connection with the homicide of Mr. Ermelindo Goncalves Fontes", a 24-year-old young man shot dead on Christmas night in a district located north of of Nice, recalls the magistrate.

An operation that “went badly”, explained, on Wednesday, the prosecutor who announced on the spot that he had seized the IGPN for intentional homicide.

During these arrests, the official “used his weapon and hit the head of one of the individuals then targeted by the police operation”, further details Xavier Bonhomme.

The young man, born in 1999 and originally from Marseille, died of his injuries while being taken care of by the emergency services.
