At least 29 people died in a stampede after an open-air prayer in the capital, Monrovia, in West Africa's Liberia.

This was confirmed by an employee of the hospital to which the dead were brought, the German Press Agency on Thursday. 

According to eyewitnesses, panic broke out among those present as armed purse snatchers mingled with the crowd.

According to the hospital in the New Kru district, 70 people are said to have been injured.

The President of Liberia, George Manneh Weah, ordered a three-day national mourning.
