Coronavirus Covid today, last minute live
Patients infected with the omicron variant of Covid-19 take longer to clear the virus after experiencing symptoms than with previous variants.
These are the conclusions of a study carried out in Japan, which could end the hope of shortening isolation periods for people who test positive.
Preliminary data from
the National Institute of Infectious Diseases
, which conducts disease surveillance in
Japan
, suggests that the amount of viral RNA is highest three to six days after diagnosis or the onset of symptoms.
The quarantine time for
Covid
positives without symptoms has recently been reduced from 10 to seven days in Spain, with a motivation based more on the scarcity of health resources than on medical arguments.
However, some studies suggest that the peak transmission period for people with other variants ranged from two days before symptoms appeared to three days afterward, with viral load peaking before symptoms appeared.
This Japanese study, however, suggests that with omicron the viral load peak may come two to three days later.
Quantification of
SARS
-CoV-2
RNA
in 83 respiratory samples from 21 cases has revealed that the amount of viral RNA was highest three to six days after diagnosis or onset of symptoms, and then gradually decreased.
