It is a sad spectacle that the foresters of the National Forestry Office (ONF) have been witnessing since the beginning of the year.

In the Gâvre forest, north of Loire-Atlantique, several wild deposits were observed in a few days.

“Plasterboard, paint pots, bulky items, green waste…, deposited there by companies or individuals, deplores Romain Perrot, communications officer at the ONF Pays-de-la-Loire.

Unfortunately, there are some quite regularly throughout the year, but for the past two weeks, the phenomenon has been on the rise.

It is always traumatic and dramatic.

Because beyond their unsightly nature, these incivilities can pollute water and soil, and prove to be dangerous for fauna and flora.

“Some wild dumps contain harmful materials such as asbestos, explains the ONF.

And contrary to what one might think, even green waste is not welcome in the forest!

Indeed, they favor invasive plants, take a long time to turn into humus: these residues degrade forest soils and can even asphyxiate them.

"Camera traps"

While investigations are underway to try to find the offenders (who risk fines ranging from 135 to 75,000 euros, or even a prison sentence), the foresters announce that they are thinking about moving up a gear.

Devices of “camera traps”, kinds of radars allowing better surveillance, could soon be installed in certain areas regularly targeted.

In the meantime, citizens who notice this type of wild deposit (in Gâvre or elsewhere) can report it on "Sentinels of Nature".

an online platform created by the association France nature environnement.
