There are islands shaped like

palm trees and world maps

and full of luxury hotels, exclusive apartments and huge shopping malls. For sample, Dubai. There are also those that, with a bit of imagination, remind us of

dinosaurs, hearts or crescents

scattered all over the planet. But what we are not so used to is that they look like a giant fingerprint seen.

Well, that's the picture that

Baljenac looks from the air,

one of the 249 islands that are part of

the Sibenik archipelago

, south of Croatia and off the Dalmatian coast.

Barely 0.14 square kilometres, this enclave owes its appearance to the stone walls erected by farmers on the nearby island of

Kaprije

to protect their crops from the wind.

Detail of the surface of the Croatian island.

It happened in the 19th century, when these neighbors (it should be noted that

Baljenac is uninhabited

; the only inhabitants are the odd rabbit) came to Baljenac to plant figs and oranges, as well as

vines and olive trees,

since this area of Croatia is popular for its vineyards.

To prevent the strong winds from hitting them, they built these

dry stone partitions

(this is the name of the technique used in other places with cold temperatures such as Scotland or Ireland), so that if they were joined together they would measure

23 kilometers long

.

boat tours

Today, the walled enclosure causes the island,

with rocky terrain and

a

coastline of 1,431 meters,

to resemble a human fingerprint, as can be seen from the images taken by

Google Earth

.

It was a

complicated job,

since the workers who erected these walls did not have the proper tools to do it.

Not even cement.

It was those responsible for

cultural conservation

of the Croatian Government who realized the uniqueness of the place.

For this reason, the State has decided to ask

UNESCO

to include it in its list of official World Heritage Sites.

For now, those who want to get to know Baljenac should know that the Croatian Tourist Office organizes

boat tours.

Of course, it is not allowed to dock in it, only to go around it, since there are no docks or anything similar.

As if that were not enough, Croatia has more aces up its sleeve when it comes to islands with incredible shapes, since another,

Galesnjak

, simulates a full-fledged heart.

Located quite close to the city of Zadar, between the towns of

Sveti Petar na Moru and Turanj, it

is included in the list of places where the most romantic propose to their partners.

It also gets to the top on February 14, Valentine's Day.
