In "Bienfait pour vous" on Europe 1, Doctor Françoise Alliot-Launois takes stock of osteoarthritis, this disease which affects the joints of 11 million French people.

She denounces "that no progress has been made in the care of patients" and gives advice to avoid getting osteoarthritis.

In France, between 10 and 12 million French people are affected by osteoarthritis, or 17% of the population.

But this pathology generally considered as an "old man's disease" does not only affect the elderly, according to Françoise Alliot-Launois, vice-president of the AFLAR association (Association Française de Lutte Anti-rheumatismale).

"It is a disease that often begins well before the quarantine. One in three patients, in fact, will have the first signs, the first symptoms of osteoarthritis before the age of 40", she explains at the microphone of Europe 1.

So to avoid pain very young or over several years, the doctor, also at the head of the Arthrosis Foundation, recommends several techniques to limit the effects: "when you feel a flare-up of osteoarthritis, particularly inflammatory, you have to immobilize and avoid playing sports", before specifying that food is also "an aggravating factor".

Concretely, you have to watch your weight: "Losing 5 kilos can relieve half of the symptoms, for example. The diet is very important."

Françoise Alliot-Launois therefore advises eating "fruits, vegetables, olive oil, fish", and more surprisingly, "spices such as turmeric, ginger or pepper".

A lack of progress in treatments in recent years

Especially since according to the survey carried out by the latter in France and Belgium, the drugs supposed to fight against osteoarthritis "relieve rather than cure".

She also denounces in substance the lack of progress in treatment in recent years.

"Another survey was carried out eight years ago by the FNARS, the federation of solidarity actors, and we see that nothing has changed. There has been no progress in the care osteoarthritis," she says.
