• The number of births increased very slightly in France in 2021, by around 0.2%, according to INSEE.

  • In Brittany and Pays-de-la-Loire, the rebound is much more significant with growth above 3%.

Who said that the health crisis only brought negative? For many families in the west of France, it is, above all, synonymous with a happy event. INSEE revealed on Tuesday that after ten years of uninterrupted decline, births had started to rise again in 2021 in Pays-de-la-Loire and Brittany. These two regions show a growth in their birth rate of more than 3% compared to 2020. Only Reunion Island observes the same dynamic. The rest of France is not in the same situation since the estimated annual growth would amount to only 0.2%.

It must be said that the first two months of the year 2021 showed, throughout the country, an erosion of births, of around -10%.

The link with the first confinement of 2020, nine months earlier, is obvious.

"This context of health crisis and great uncertainty may have discouraged couples from procreating, encouraging them to postpone their parenting plans for several months," explains INSEE.

But this discouragement obviously did not last.

On the contrary, from March 2021, births increased sharply.

Then they increased further in July 2021, nine months after the second confinement of 2020, to remain the following months at a level much higher than in previous years in Brittany and Pays-de-la-Loire, according to statistical estimates.

Sudden desires or staggered projects?

" We did not expect that.

It lends itself to discussion”, is surprised Arnaud Degorre, director of Insee Pays-de-la-Loire, who however refuses to speak of “mini baby-boom” as long as the phenomenon will not be confirmed “over time”. .

“Parents have had more children during this Covid period and this is much more noticeable than elsewhere in France.

But is it really a change in behavior?

Are these projects that had been delayed or, on the contrary, projects that have been advanced?

We will have to study 2022 to decide, ”comments Nathalie Cloarec, deputy director of Insee Pays-de-la-Loire.

In Brittany, this peak in the birth rate is driven by the Côtes d'Armor and Morbihan departments.

In Pays-de-la-Loire, Maine-et-Loire and Loire-Atlantique boost the average.
