He had caught a thousand sea urchins in a few hours: near Marseille, a man was surprised by agents from the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) and the Côte Bleue Marine Park, who handed over his prey to the water.
On December 29, environmental protection officers were patrolling the coast of the Côte Bleue marine park, the season being favorable for fishing sea urchins, a popular seafood "for the holidays", said Emilie Desmarest, head of the East unit of the OFB in the Bouches-du-Rhône.
“Whole bags of sea urchins”
"We spotted this spearfisher because he was doing short apneas, without moving, which is typical of sea urchin fishing," she added.
Observing him with binoculars for several hours, Emilie Desmarest and her colleague saw the man bring up whole bags of sea urchins, "whereas for individuals, it is limited to four dozen per person in the Bouches-du -Rhône, the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes”.
Finally arrested by the agents, the man gave his collection - 985 sea urchins - without putting up any resistance, "aware of not being in the nails", even going so far as to guide the environmental police towards the cliffs at his feet. which he stored his catches.
