On January 15, local time, an underwater volcano on Hongahaapai Island in the South Pacific island country of Tonga erupted violently and triggered a tsunami.

At present, many countries in the Pacific Rim have issued tsunami warnings.

The footage of the volcanic eruption monitored by the Chinese meteorological satellite Fengyun-4B showed that the volcanic ash cloud erupted at the moment of the volcanic eruption broke through the tropopause and formed an umbrella-shaped cloud cluster with a diameter of nearly 500km.

Volcanologists from the University of Auckland in New Zealand said the eruption was one of the worst in Tonga in the past 30 years.

Studies of historical eruptions from the same volcano suggest the eruption could last for weeks or even months.
