Forgetting

Forgetting can be a blessing or a curse. You meet a person in a meeting or in a mall for the first time and you may forget his name after a while, and you may remember his face or remember his name and shape but do not remember where you met him. This is a cosmic problem or experience that happens to any human being anywhere in the world.

Even those who boast a photographic or iron memory have occasional bouts of forgetfulness. Most of us blame aging even though our mothers and fathers tell us stories in minute detail that do not indicate that their memory has deteriorated due to age.

Is a daily routine that never changes good for memory, or is a life of adventure and renewal better for curing forgetfulness or for strengthening memory?

Memory scientists say a life of renewal is better because it exercises memory to extrapolate and examine details.

The life of renewal is full of hustle and bustle and ups and downs, so forgetting the details here is the best way to acclimatise the memory.

People think, for example, that if they have a photographic memory, they will remember all the faces they pass by, but memory studies have shown that those who have a strong memory do not distinguish between a particular face in normal lighting and the same face in dim lighting.

They mistake the face they memorize if a person wears glasses or grows a mustache and beard;

Ie changed its features.

Memory falters so much in the details of the difference that it forgets the face shape you thought it had memorized.

According to memory scientists, this type of forgetting is useful because it “strengthens memory with some forgetting,” as they put it.

In fact, creative people do not have a strong memory. Creativity as a general idea is to come up with something new from known ideas.

Here, the memory links with the ideas known to the creator must not be strong until creativity is formed.

Memory lapses are very useful for social life. While researchers are working on developing a medicine to prevent forgetfulness, marital relations experts, for example, are calling on researchers to invent a medicine for forgetting.

They say that people who are going through marital or emotional crises suffer from memory that poses challenges to the marital relationship in the long term.

Resentment and revenge are caused by the inability to forget, and people who are plunged into a cycle of anger or fear suffer severe loneliness and in extreme cases commit suicide.

One of the best ways to get your brain out of bouts of traumatic memories is to form and stay in interactive social relationships.

Episodes of painful memories occur, for example, due to post-traumatic stress disorder, which is a mental illness caused by memory and isolates those affected by it, and this opens the door for them to treat themselves with alcohol or drugs to obscure their painful memories, and when intoxicants or influences control the mind, a person may resort to violence without awareness of it .

Attitude

I always thought I had a good memory, and I remember getting so stressed days before my wedding that I forgot my account card PIN!

It's a number I've never forgotten in 20 years except this time, and that's the worst forgetting thing that ever happened to me.

• Even those who boast a photographic or iron memory prone to bouts of forgetfulness.
