Sidney Poitier was a great inspiration to Denzel Washington and the actor took advantage of the promotion of
Macbeth
, his new film, to pay tribute to the immense actor who died last week at the age of 94.
“He was a mentor and, needless to say, an example and a friend.
He is someone who has been there, who has done what has to be done,” he told Entertainment Tonight.
“When I first met him, about 40 years ago, I was in a play and he came backstage.
He said to me, “You know, you're good”.
Sidney Poitier telling a 20-year-old guy, "Hey, you're good," that's all I needed to hear.
It pushed me to keep going,” he revealed.
An unforgettable moment
Without this seemingly innocuous gesture on the part of Sidney Poitier, perhaps Denzel Washington would not have found himself, many years later, to receive the Oscar for best actor for his performance in
Training Day
in 2002. D Moreover, the actor had not failed to thank his mentor who was present in the assembly and had received an honorary award just before.
In all, Denzel Washington has received two Oscars and been nominated no less than eight other times.
Unfortunately, Sidney Poitier will not be there to see if his colt will win a new statuette for his performance in
Macbeth
.
