The number of organ donations remained stable in the second year of the corona pandemic.

In 2021, 933 people donated at least one organ after their death, as the German Organ Transplantation Foundation (DSO) announced on Wednesday in Frankfurt am Main in its annual balance sheet.

That corresponds to 11.2 donors per million inhabitants.

In 2020, 913 people had donated organs.

The number of donors rose by 2.2 percent.

At the same time, however, the number of organs removed in Germany fell by 1.2 percent.

Kidneys were transplanted most frequently, 1492 of the 2905 organs removed.

Livers, hearts, lungs, pancreas and intestines followed.

"In view of the pandemic that has been going on for almost two years and the resulting constant exposure to intensive care units, this stability is to be assessed positively," said Axel Rahmel, Medical Director of the DSO.

In the 46 German transplant centers, 2,979 organs were transferred after death.

The number of organs transplanted was 74 higher than the number of organs donated.

The reason for the difference is the international organ exchange in the Eurotransplant association.

In the course of the corona pandemic, this difference became smaller.

In the past year, 2853 patients were able to survive through organ donations.

According to the DSO, 8,448 people are waiting for a donor organ.
