The Ueno Zoo in Tokyo is currently closed because of the coronavirus.

But the zoo makes an exception for the debut of the rare panda twins Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei.

On three days until Friday, 1080 visitors, selected by lot, can marvel at the twin pair for one minute each.

A video of the zoo shows delighted visitors who praise the cuteness of the bears behind their corona protective masks.

Each of the twins weighs 13 to 14 kilograms.

Xiao Xiao and his sister Lei Lei were born to the 16-year-old panda bear Shin Shin in Tokyo last June.

The pandas are on loan from the Chinese government.

The offspring also have to return to China after a certain period of time.

The pandemic is making the journey more difficult.

The bear Xiang Xiang, who was born four years ago to Shin Shin's daughter in the Tokyo zoo, has been in the Japanese capital for more than a year longer than Beijing originally allowed.

When the Ueno Zoo in the middle of Tokyo will open again is unclear.

The corona virus has spread dramatically in Japan in the past few days.

For the first time since the beginning of September, the number of new infections nationwide reached more than 10,000 on Wednesday.

This is little compared to Germany, but it marks the beginning of the sixth virus wave for Japan.

The number of new infections was last more than ten times higher than a week ago.
