• The fifth wave of coronavirus has an impact on public transport in the Lyon region.

  • For the moment, this is not too penalizing for users, since the overall supply of the TCL network has fallen by only 4%, against 2.5% in December, compared to its normal operation.

  • On the side of the SNCF, it simply evokes "local adaptations of very small scale", in no case during peak hours.

The sharp rise in “unexpected absenteeism” caused by the fifth wave of Covid-19 does not spare public transport, everywhere in France. In Lyon, Keolis, manager of the TCL network, noted "an overall offer down 4%" in January, against 2.5% a month ago, compared to its classic system of metro, tram and bus lines. “There is a lack of between 150 and 200 drivers every day [the network employs a total of 2,700] to provide the service,” explains Keolis, due to the vagaries of the outbreak of the Omicron variant.

About thirty lines have been targeted and therefore reduced, with an adjustment made twice a day, according to different criteria: those with a recovery rate lower than the network average, those that can benefit from a modal shift or that allow higher capacity (the trolleybus compared to a conventional bus).

One of the main priorities of the TCL remains to provide the best possible service to “health centers and university campuses”.

TCL attendance down 10% compared to December

“For example, we lighten the week T1 rather than T2, explained on this subject Monday on Radio Scoop Jérôme Berthonneau, deputy general manager of Keolis.

First of all because the attendance is lower on the T1 line than on the T2 line, but also because the latter is for students, with the service of the faculties, and that of the hospitals.

Conversely, T2 is reduced on weekends since there are fewer students, and T1 returns to its standard hours, with frequentation of shopping centers.

"

The massive use of teleworking since January 3 has obviously had an impact on traffic to the TCL network, which is down 10% compared to December, and 25% compared to pre-Covid-19 traffic. .

SNCF traffic "maintained during peak hours"

On the side of the SNCF, whether it is the TER or TGV circulating in the Lyon region, we mention "very small local adaptations", exclusively grouped together on the least congested time slot, between 10 p.m. and 6 p.m. hours of the morning. "We were not as impacted as other regions, indicates the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes network of SNCF, which does not wish to communicate figures. We have put in a few substitute coaches to adapt, but all the rush hour lines have so far been able to be maintained. "

This Wednesday morning, on the key time slot from 6 to 9 a.m., eleven TER were for example still able to link Bourgoin-Jallieu to Lyon, twelve for the Saint-Etienne-Lyon line, and thirteen for Vienne-Lyon.

SNCF nonetheless encourages its users to consult the following day's traffic programs, updated every day from 5 p.m. here.
