Demand for LPs has increased so much in recent years that there has been a shortage of vinyl in the industry.

In the last five years, vinyl sales have risen by 77% in Sweden, and today they sell more than the CD, which accounts for only three percent of music sales.

This according to figures from the industry association Ifpi.

The CD, on the other hand, is hopeless.

But it has its defenders.

Tommie X is a DJ and creator, and has around 600 CDs in his collection.

- The vinyl seems to arouse a lot of nostalgia in people, but the CD has an undeserved bad reputation.

The CD may be considered ugly and a bit plastic in comparison, like something you buy at the gas station.

But it may not have been long enough, he says.

May be a trend break

It is 13 years since streamed music was introduced in Sweden for the first time, and since then the CD has been marginalized.

Sales fell by more than half between 2016 and 2020, and people continue to go with their old album collections to the dump.

Tommie X was born in 1986.

- I'm quite nostalgic so CD is really cool for me.

Then I have friends who just think it's unnecessary, it's just downloading or streaming the music.

But a trend break may be on the way.

In the US, record sales increased for the first time in 18 years, according to recent figures from Billboard.

The reason is a number of major album releases, including from Adele, which have pushed up the numbers.

Will a new generation discover the CD, do you think?

-I definitely think so.

I have a friend who was born in 2000, he borrowed my binders with CDs, and was completely taken by this concept "album".

A certain number of songs in an order that someone has decided, plus a special cover, says Tommie X.
