Children aged 9-12 are not only the ones who read the most, but they also listen to books the most.
This is shown by a new study from the Swedish Publishers' Association.
They like to listen to long book series and like to follow the stories on other platforms as well.
- Audiobooks for children are transmedial so it is connected: radio, theater, film, TV and podcasts and Youtube.
They may first be broadcast on radio, then it may be an audio book and then perhaps a printed book, says Ann Steiner, associate professor of sociology of literature at Uppsala University.
Does listening replace reading?
But whether listening among children and young people strengthens or competes with reading books is not known.
- There are no signs yet that audiobooks replace reading a printed book.
But it is very clear that when audiobooks become more common in school and preschool and when it becomes more accessible, it gradually affects how children absorb stories.
And it can be positive that you become interested in literature, but it can also affect their ability to absorb and decode long text, says Ann Steiner.
Astrid Lindgren not popular
Something that surprised the researchers was that Astrid Lindgren does not stand as strong in the audiobook market.
Hardly any of the books on the top 100 lists are written by the Swedish icon, and those who participated were far down.
Rapportförfattarna ser flera möjliga förklaringar, som att hon är fortfarande säljer mycket fysiska böcker och är populär på bibliotek och därmed läses högt tillsammans, samt att hennes inläsningar finns på andra musiktjänster parallellt med de stora strömningstjänster för litteratur som studien tittat på. Men kanske har dagens barn växt ifrån Astrid Lindgrens sätt att läsa.
– Sedan tror jag att en aspekt att hennes inläsningar är gjorda för länge sedan och det har skett förändringar på hur vi tänker att en ljudbok ska låta. På det sättet finns det en risk för hennes inläsningar inte går hem för en yngre generation som de gjorde för min, säger Ann Steiner.
