Scientists are making vegan eggs.. Will it be an alternative to raising chickens?

A team of scientists was able to manufacture what was described as environmentally friendly vegetable eggs as a good alternative to raising chickens through a type of fungus.

Researchers in Finland created one of the basic proteins found in egg whites, known as ovalbumin, by extracting it from a type of fungus.

According to sources, scientists were able to extract these proteins from a fungus called Trichoderma reesei, a type of fungus known to cause damage to clothing.

And the agency “Sputnik” quoted the British newspaper “Daily Mail” that “Ovalbumin” protein can be produced “ethically” with the aim of manufacturing what can be described as an egg substitute or powder called “Tr-OVA”, and used as a sustainable alternative to chicken egg white protein powder. It is a widely used ingredient in the food industry.

They found that Tr-OVA reduced domestication land use requirements by nearly 90 percent and greenhouse gases by up to 55 percent, compared to producing regular chicken eggs.

The research was conducted by scientists at the University of Helsinki jointly with the Technical Research Center “VTT” in Finland, where scientists confirmed in a research workshop that “the production of ovalbumin using Trichoderma reesei can become a sustainable alternative to chicken egg white protein powder.”

Although this approach can generate ovalbumin on an experimental scale, the environmental effects of large-scale industrial production have not been explored.

It is noteworthy that the global consumption of egg proteins amounted to about 1.6 million tons in 2020, and this consumption is expected to increase in the coming years, making the matter worse.

Intensive poultry farming methods led to outbreaks of zoonoses with these breeding centers serving as an “important reservoir of human pathogens”.
