“Irina” is not the name of a beautiful blonde woman from Eastern Europe or the countries of the former Soviet republics, but rather an acronym for the International Renewable Energy Agency, where the UAE has worked for more than a decade, in unremitting efforts to become a global platform for offering international solutions to address energy issues and transformation challenges. In order to contribute to addressing the environmental issue, when it was decided to host Abu Dhabi the first intergovernmental organization to encourage the adoption of renewable energy worldwide, with the aim of facilitating the transfer of renewable energy technologies, and providing the expertise and practical practices for implementation and the policies necessary to achieve this.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was formed on January 26, 2009 with a membership of 75 countries, and in June of the same year, “Masdar City” in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (the world’s first carbon-neutral, zero-waste city based entirely on renewable energy) was chosen to host the headquarters. Head of the General Secretariat of the International Renewable Energy Agency, which is a precedent for an international agency to choose a Middle Eastern city as its headquarters.

Renewable energy has become a pillar of solutions to the challenges of the future of energy in the world, and the center of gravity in addressing the reduction of the effects of climate change, global warming and pollution, and the maturity of technologies, the high efficiency and feasibility of renewable energy production, and the improvement of efficiency and reliability, reinforced by the continuous decrease in the cost of renewable energy technologies, To make Abu Dhabi, through IRENA, a global capital and a primary driving force in promoting the transition and the growing spread of the use of renewable energy internationally, and a scientific and civilized center to provide expertise and capabilities to industrialized and developing countries alike.

The Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Maryam bint Mohammed Al Muhairi, said: “With the escalation of climate risks that threaten all countries of the world, we will be keen to support the international community to develop an ambitious plan that focuses on actual progress and transforming challenges into opportunities for economic growth, thanks to the forward-looking vision of our leadership, and on the land of the Emirates. The headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency, and the incubator of many international events focused on achieving sustainability and environmental protection, world leaders will gather to continue and enhance the process of addressing the challenge of climate change, and we will promote the exploration of innovative solutions that are economically viable, and capable of supporting and accelerating our work to reduce global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius, we are keen to share our successful approach to transforming challenges into growth opportunities to ensure a healthier and more sustainable planet for future generations,” to enhance the level of aspirations at the federal and local levels, through several initiatives, including:Developing the level of partnership between Masdar and others with energy production and distribution companies.

We ask here: Will we witness bold decisions that encourage real estate owners to transform, to become part of the system of local “independent” production of renewable energy?

Will conflicts of interest be resolved in some quarters between organization and production?

And the abolition of illogical requirements to limit the ceiling of renewable energy production to (1) megawatts.

It is unreasonable to talk about supporting transformation, while some parties still want to be the producer, the regulator and the legislator at the same time!

Will we witness innovative financial facilities and solutions and a banking partnership that will enable individuals and companies, with competitive rates of profits, to contribute to the transition to renewable energy?

Will the housing programs participate in supporting this transformation with promotional financing programs for citizens' housing?

Will the food security sector witness competitive standards that stimulate the management of renewable energy production on farms, and the optimal use of water resources such as wastewater (black or gray, or returned from desalination plants)?

Will this include giant desalination plants?

“All of you are shepherds and each of you is responsible for his flock.” To ensure a safe life for the future of our children on this planet, we must distribute responsibilities, and participate in joint practical initiatives in which society contributes to all its spectrum, and we, in our leadership from the founding fathers of empowerment leaders, set an example in preserving the environment and cultivating green belts. Afforestation and investment in renewable energy, to distribute responsibilities, empower and motivate everyone to participate.

And for the rest of the talk..

• Will we witness innovative financial solutions and banking partnership for individuals and companies to contribute to enabling the transition to renewable energy?
