  • Criminal Law From abuse to harassment

The tenor Plácido Domingo participated tonight in the recital of the Zarzuela Grand Solidarity Gala for the benefit of Cáritas, chaired by Queen Sofía and held at the National Auditorium. Domingo was part of a cast in which the singers Carmen Solís, Marina Monzó, Nancy Fabiola Herrera, Cristina Faús, Celso Albelo, Jorge de León and up to 200 artists who performed pieces from the repertoire of the zarzuela and ... and

even here, the news would have been more or less routine

, at least until a couple of years ago. But, in 2022, the alignment of those three proper names, Plácido Domingo, Doña Sofía and Auditorio Nacional, has a new meaning.

Plácido Domingo's performance was the third time he has sung in Spain after the accusation of sexual harassment of several co-stars, some identified and others anonymous, became known in the press. Placido Domingo

never had to answer criminally for these complaints but he did testify before a commission of AGMA, the union of opera singers in the United States

.

In that session, the Spanish tenor made a formal apology for his conduct, a fact that the Government of Spain used as an argument to veto him in the seasons of public or semi-public institutions. Domingo, according to that reading, was a

confessed stalker

who should not be hired by the institutions. The singer, on the other hand, maintained that apologizing for private behavior

is not the same as acknowledging any type of crime

.

At that point, defending the singer's presumption of innocence or his public signaling

became political options

. In June of last year, Domingo returned to perform on a Spanish stage (also then the National Auditorium) in another private initiative and charity gala, hired by the Excellence Foundation in favor of the Red Cross Responde. The president of the Community of Madrid Isabel Díaz Ayuso attended that recital, in which Domingo was the absolute protagonist on stage. Ayuso was applauded by the public, who read that his presence was

a challenge to the government's veto

and who also cheered the singer.

At the turn of the summer, the singer reappeared in Mérida, in a concert at the Roman Theater, hired by another private promoter, the Stone & Music festival.

That day there was also

acquittal applause

for the tenor although a picket was manifested at the entrance of the venue with posters demanding the cancellation of the show.

Yesterday, in Madrid, the presence of Doña Sofía had an apolitical justification (she chairs the Cáritas board of trustees) but also the air of public support.

In 2018, before the fall from grace, Doña Sofía referred to the singer as her "friend."

Yesterday there was applause for everyone.

The atmosphere was conducive.
