In a humanitarian disaster that rocked Pakistan, at least 16 people died after getting stuck in their cars during a snow storm in the mountainous city of Morey in the north of the country, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said Saturday.

"At least 16 to 19 people have died inside their cars," the interior minister said in a video message, adding that the army was trying to clear roads and rescue those still stranded.

"I asked the locals to help the tourists and provide them with food and blankets," he added.

More than 100,000 vehicles have entered the city, about seventy kilometers from the capital, Islamabad, in the past three days, a spokesman for Morey police announced, causing a suffocating traffic jam.

Despite warnings from the authorities, visitors flock to see the unusual snowfall in this small tourist town so loved by the capital's residents.

According to the Punjab provincial authorities, Morey was declared a "disaster area" and residents were invited to stay away from it.
