[Explanation] The opening of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is about to begin. The "Water Cube" swimming pool was built with ice on a rack, and it turned into an "Ice Cube" quietly.

In this transformation, a number of professors from the School of Civil Engineering and School of Architecture of Harbin Institute of Technology led the scientific research team. During the preparations for the Winter Olympics, they creatively proposed a fast-changing curling arena structure to help the Water Cube become a "water-ice". The "conversion, two-wheel drive" compound double Olympic venue fully guarantees the smooth holding of the Winter Olympics curling event.

[Explanation] Professor Zhang Wenyuan from the School of Civil Engineering of Harbin Institute of Technology told reporters that converting the "Water Cube" into an "Ice Cube" in a short time is not simply solidifying water, but like "building a house" at the bottom of a pool with a certain slope. Install adjustable steel structure brackets, concrete panels and high-performance insulation, and finally lay a layer of about 8cm thick thin ice on it, which greatly reduces energy consumption and keeps the ice surface smooth and stable, providing a comfortable arena for athletes surroundings.

First of all, we require this venue. The rigidity of our support frame must be large, and its bearing capacity must be high. It is necessary to ensure that the venue is basically free of vertical vibration and will not affect the operation of our curling.

In addition, we require this structure. During the process of construction and use, the support frame should not damage the original bottom surface of our swimming pool, as well as the wall of the swimming pool.

Another thing is that our structure must have the function of rapid installation and assembly, so that it can be quickly converted, and our structure must be able to adjust the elevation of our structure, so that the uneven bottom of the pool can be applied.

[Explanation] At the same time, Professor Zhang Wenyuan and Associate Professor Ding Yong also built a safety and health monitoring system that can intelligently perceive the ice surface structure in the stadium, and developed the reinforcement and rapid repair technology for the ice surface of the ice rink. The data is used for the ice surface. "Real-time physical examination" ensures the safe conduct of the event.

[Concurrent] Ding Yong, Associate Professor, School of Civil Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology

We need to use the health monitoring system, a complete set of IoT systems to verify the results of our preliminary design, analysis and construction. This is its first function.

The second function, we need to display and evaluate our current curling arena in real time, its safety and competition comfort, this is its second function.

The third function is that we need to take out these data and accumulate these data to establish a standard for our Olympic heritage, its promotion and application, and its promotion and application within our country and internationally.

[Explanation] The construction of the ice surface is basically completed, but how to ensure that the ice does not sublime in the original high-temperature and high-humidity environment of the Water Cube has become a major problem in the construction of the "Ice Cube". The team of Professor Lu Shiliang from the School of Architecture of Harbin Institute of Technology "Research on Energy Saving of Low Emissivity Ceilings in Ice Arenas".

The shielding transformation of the ETFE membrane structure roof of the Water Cube reduces the load of heat radiation on the operation of the ice making system.

Professor Lu told reporters that this technology is equivalent to putting a "sunshade" on the Water Cube to prevent damage to the ice surface.

[Concurrent] Lu Shiliang, Professor, School of Architecture, Harbin Institute of Technology

As you can see in your hand, this is a membrane such as ETFE. Sunlight can enter the room through this membrane, but the sun is usually good, but in the presence of ice, the infrared rays in the sun can promote The sublimation of ice, in order to prevent sublimation, our research on this subject is how to use the original film and what kind of shielding method to block the infrared rays in the sun.

After experimentation, finally choose a kind of material called PVC.

It is to make the original high-temperature and high-humidity water environment in the room become low-temperature and low-humidity. It is to improve its physical environment while saving energy. It is estimated that 30% of ice-making energy consumption can be saved.

[Explanation] It is understood that this Winter Olympics has put forward the vision of "sustainable to the future", and sustainable operation is also a key part of the Winter Olympics venue guarantee and use after the game.

Professor Lu Shiliang and Associate Professor Yu Yang from the School of Architecture of Harbin Institute of Technology led a research team to collect relevant indicators, design models and technical methods covering typical venues in Northeast my country, North China, and East China, and build the first swimming and ice venue operation database supported by big data. It provides direction for the research and development of key technologies for the sustainable operation of the Double Olympic venues, and also provides data standards for the future construction of the venues.

[Concurrent] Yu Yang, Associate Professor, School of Architecture, Harbin Institute of Technology

Sustainability refers not only to the time of the game, but also to the specific work of many operations after the game, but the operation involves its energy consumption, scene conversion, functional requirements, income and expenditure, what is the use of this data?

This data is used for horizontal comparison.

Therefore, these databases can clearly show a state of operation. The subject is to build this database from an operational perspective and from a sustainable perspective.

[Explanation] The Water Cube has become a complex double Olympic venue that can be converted from water to ice.

Harbin Institute of Technology uses innovative and intelligent technology to help the Water Cube achieve rapid "transformation", help the Winter Olympics venues achieve sustainable operation, and contribute to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
