On New Year's Eve, a dog has become a hero when it saved its master from freezing to death.

Four hikers including the Alaskan Malamute named North were on their way in the Velebit Mountains in Croatia when one of them slipped at an altitude of almost 1700 meters and fell 150 meters with the animal, as "The Guardian" reported.

The fallen hiker Grga Brkic injured his leg so badly that he couldn't get back on the trail.

The two other hikers called for help, but could not get to the scene of the accident themselves.

However, the dog remained unharmed and warmed its master until the emergency services arrived.

"This little dog is a real miracle"

The emergency services only arrived after 13 hours - the rescue operation was made more difficult by snow, ice and broken branches.

North turned out to be an important first responder: the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service wrote on Twitter that the dog had curled up next to Brkic to keep him warm.

One could take an example from the dog when it comes to care.

The situation turned out to be safe for both North and his master.

Brkic told Croatian media: "This little dog is a real miracle."
