The "Hägglunds", amphibious tracked vehicles, were originally designed for the military.

This is a first: they are now equipping a municipal police force in France.

In Mandelieu-La Napoule (Alpes-Maritimes), where floods have been devastating and fatal in recent years, the town hall has just acquired two copies.

“The crises of 2015 and 2019 [taught us] that conventional means were insufficient to intervene at the height of the storm throughout the country and to secure citizens.

We also understood that the municipal services would be more and more alone on the front line and in primary intervention, especially if the disaster impacts several cities or departments simultaneously, the means of the State being insufficient ”, notes the Mayor LR Sébastien Leroy .

Up to 75 km / h on the road and at 5 knots in navigation

These two vehicles, each capable of carrying sixteen people, are able to cross waterways despite their depth, travel up to 75 km / h on the road and at 5 knots in navigation, says the municipality.

They will be maneuvered by a "heavy intervention brigade", which is "made up of specially trained agents" and which "will act in close cooperation with the teams of the technical services, also equipped and trained to intervene in times of crisis", she specifies.
