A fire in a residential building in the US city of Philadelphia killed at least 13 people, including seven children.

The fire broke out on the second floor of a three-story row house not far from the city center, as the fire department announced on Wednesday.

"It was terrible," said a representative of the emergency services.

It is "one of the worst fires" he has experienced in his 35 years as a firefighter.

The death toll could still rise.

The fire brigade arrived at the location of the fire at around 6:40 a.m. local time on Wednesday morning.

It took the emergency services 50 minutes to bring the flames under control.

The house in question is located in the Fairmont district and therefore not far from several well-known museums in the city on the US east coast.

According to media reports, it was social housing.
