• Pays-de-la-Loire is one of the three most dynamic regions in France in terms of demography.

  • However, regional growth tends to slow down, except in Loire-Atlantique.

  • In Mayenne and Sarthe, the population is stable or even decreasing.

No less than 3.8 million! This is the number of inhabitants residing in the Pays-de-la-Loire region, according to the latest figures from INSEE based on the 2019 census. With an increase of + 0.7% per year, the rate of population growth is slowing down, as in most French regions, but remains above the national average (+ 0.4%). Only the Corsica and Occitania regions are doing better. "The population of the Loire region increased by 24,270 inhabitants per year between 2013 and 2019, the equivalent of the municipalities of Sablé-sur-Sarthe and Châteaubriant combined", indicates INSEE.

The Loire-Atlantique department remains more than ever the demographic locomotive of Pays-de-la-Loire with growth which is accelerating and stands at + 1.2% per year.

Each year, it welcomes some 16,750 additional inhabitants

for a total population now estimated at 1.42 million inhabitants.

"This growth places it in third place among metropolitan departments, behind Gironde and Haute-Garonne", specifies INSEE.

Knowing that it is the Nantes and Nazairian agglomerations which bear the bulk of demographic growth.

Sarthe loses inhabitants

To a lesser extent, Vendée and Maine-et-Loire also continue to gain inhabitants.

The population of the Vendée department is growing by 0.7% per year on average, the equivalent of 4,989 additional residents.

More than 685,000 people now live in Vendée.

Maine-et-Loire is more populated (818,200 inhabitants) but attracts less: its population is growing by only 0.4% per year.

Conversely, the population of the department of Mayenne is stable.

That of Sarthe even decreased slightly (-0.1%), i.e. the loss of around 440 inhabitants per year on average since 2013.
