Airport staff in Mauritius have found a newborn, who was left in the litter box in the bathroom of an aircraft.

Authorities have arrested a 20-year-old woman from Madagascar, who is suspected of having given birth on the flight.

According to the BBC, the Air Mauritius plane, coming from Madagascar, landed at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on January 1.

Airport staff found the infant while they were performing a routine customs check of the plane.

Staff noticed bloody towels in the bathroom of the plane, and rushed the child to a public hospital for treatment.

Airport police questioned all passengers on the plane.

The woman suspected of being the child's mother, who initially denied that it was her son, was subjected to a medical examination which confirmed that she had just given birth.

The authorities took the woman to a hospital, where she is being monitored by the police.

It is reported that she and the baby are in good health, and the woman, who arrived in Mauritius to work for two years, after being discharged from hospital, is scheduled to be questioned and charged with abandoning a newborn.
