A mother with a large family finds a positive pregnancy test in her bathroom.
She then investigates to find out who owns it.
Alexandra Lamy and Philippe Katerine lead the dance of a sensitive comedy with well-sketched characters.
Not sure that we really want to be in the place of Alexandra Lamy in
Le Test
by Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud.
In this film discovered at the Angoulême Francophone Film Festival, the mother of a family who is very (too?) Involved in the lives of her family, whom she plays, finds a positive pregnancy test in the trash in her bathroom and must find who it may well belong ...
“I think that many women can recognize themselves in this mother who gets involved in everything and believes that nothing can work without her, explains Alexandra Lamy to
20 Minutes
.
She does not realize that she is suffocating those around her to the point that no one comes to confide in her when there is a real concern.
“Between her four children, their girlfriends and her unfaithful husband played by Philippe Katerine, the poor thing is spoiled for choice as to the owner of the famous test.
And hypotheses are rife because no one seems to know the truth or be ready to reveal it to him.
A golden family (almost)
"It had been a long time since I had read such a funny and fine script," specifies Philippe Katerine. Family relationships are shown in a subtle, non-caricature way. A clever scenario co-written with Noé Debré reserves its share of surprises while the mother leads the investigation and in the process learns a form of letting go. "This fantasy does not fall into the panel of received ideas, insists Alexandra Lamy. Each character is sketched with care and delicacy. This is the case for the adult couple but also for their children, big teens, to which the spectator quickly becomes attached. We have a weakness for the gymnast girl trying to find her place among her brothers with strong personalities.
“There is no malice in this story, says Philippe Katerine, nor any cynicism: these people love each other and do their best, sometimes clumsily but with the best intentions in the world.
The solution to the riddle is bittersweet.
It comes at the right time to underline how little we sometimes know those who are close to us.
Like the opening of the film where the heroine "takes the taxi" for her children by leading them to various activities,
The Test
leads the spectator on the road to a happiness that is not at all a long quiet river.
“We wanted this family to be credible,” insists Alexandra Lamy.
It is a success.
