• 2020 figures Covid sinks the Spanish cinema box office to the worst record in history

Cycle change, gradual recovery, new paradigm, old fears ... For the second year in a row, the film industry faces the abyss of depopulation and more or less cluttered phrases.

The other Spain emptied.

The numbers of attendance to theaters in 2021, without worsening, do not improve. Although more money has been made, the forecasts, even the saddest ones, were infinitely less bleak. Despite the catastrophic numbers of 2020 being exceeded, there is not a single data (or few and all pending from Spider-Man) that invites optimism. If the almost

170 million

collected in the year of confinement were just a gloomy shadow of the

624

of the previous season (that of the end of the crisis), the

245

the one that ends now does not clear any of the great doubts. It is, to place us, half of what was achieved in 2013, the worst of the entire decade before COVID that in the midst of the crisis in theaters accumulated 506 million euros (the Spanish made 70 million then).

But since everything bad is always liable to get worse (as Filomena showed us well), the worst part goes to Spanish cinema.

The 40 million completed at the box office are two less than what was supposedly achieved in the worst year imaginable,

that of the closure and the applause to the toilets; Netflix's in vein. If in December of last Christmas we spoke, despite everything and as the only possible consolation, of a quota of cinema screen from here compared to outside of almost 25%, this time it is around 16% (of every 100 that went to the cinema, 16 opted for Spanish cinema). Otherwise, the increase in viewers has not had an impact on Spanish production. More people have gone to the movies (it has gone from 28 million tickets sold to 40 million), but that increase has not been, by far, proportional.

It must be taken into account that in general terms, the cinemas in Spain have not suffered in 2021, unlike in 2020, no closure beyond the specific capacity restrictions or localized closures. To this we must add that without having great premieres from the box office, there has not been a total drought like the one suffered a year before. In other words, in a panorama as indefinite as this one, there are enough arguments for each of the sides: that of the defeatists and that of those who never give up. That is to say, the unknown is still there and, for now,

there is no way of knowing if we are experiencing a structural change that wipes out each of the habits and manners that have made the cinema

or it is merely a more unwanted and endless sequel to the virus. . It seems like the former, but it's early.

Among the ten most viewed films, the first Spanish one sneaks

into fourth place

and is once again the standard production of Santiago Segura. In this case,

'A todo tren: Asturias destination'

which reaches 8 and a half million euros. In 2020, the almost 13 million euros collected from

'Father there is no more than one 2'

made it the most viewed of the year ahead of '

1917

' or even, of '

Tenet',

by Christopher Nolan. This year that honor is that of the very late, recently released,

'Spider-Man: No Way Home'

. Its worldwide success (the third best weekend in history) has been replicated in Spain. At the moment it accumulates

15 million

way of the more than safe 20. Keep in mind that the second title on the list,

'Fast & Furious 9'

, barely reached the middle, at ten.

The picture of Spanish cinema is completed by '

Way down

', by Jaume Balagueró,

'Operación Camarón

', by Carlos Therón,

'El buen patron'

, by Fernando León de Aranoa, '

Maixabel

', by Icíar Bollaín, and '

Parallel mothers' ,

of Pedro Almodóvar.

All of them above two million box office.

The rest is a rosary of up to 468 films according to the record of the Film Institute (ICAA) where the last of all,

'

Free play

', accumulates 4 euros of collection thanks to a single spectator (the director's mother?).
