A year ago, on December 27, 2020,

vaccination against Covid-19

began throughout Europe

. It was a few minutes after 09:00 in the morning when Araceli Hidalgo, a 96-year-old woman, received the first dose administered in Spain at the Los Olmos residence in Guadalajara. "Very nervous", Hidalgo was quick to state before the cameras that "it had been nothing," just "a little itchy." After her, she received the Pfizer vaccine - the first to get approval from the European Medicines Agency -

Mónica Tapias

, a nursing assistant and the youngest health worker at the center. «It is a pride. Many people have died and it is a pity that they did not arrive in time for the vaccine, "he said.

They were the first, who inaugurated a vaccination process that has been a complete success and that has placed Spain in the first international positions of administration of vaccines, as recognized by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO).

Since December 27 of last year, 84,868,049 doses of anti-Covid vaccines have been administered in our country, 99.2% of those received, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

To date, 38,704,766 people (91.9% of the population over 12 years of age and 81.6% of the general population) have a dose in their body.

The number of Spaniards with the two-dose regimen amounts to 37,832,328,

which represents 89.8% of the target population and 79.7% of the total population

In some age groups, such as those over 80 years of age, the percentage of immunized is 100%.

To date, the age group with the lowest vaccination rate is that of people between 30 and 39 years old, with 78.3% of individuals vaccinated.

First, the vulnerable

The vaccination campaign began by prioritizing the immunization of the most vulnerable, such as the elderly, and health personnel. At that time, only the

Pfizer / BioNTech

injectable was available

, of which more than 58 million doses have been administered. Later, the products of Moderna (more than 14 million vaccines administered), AstraZeneca (more than nine million doses) and Janssen (almost two million immunizations) received the go-ahead from the authorities. And soon to be joined by these available vaccines is a fifth option, Novavax's product, Novaxovid, which received the green light from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) last week for use in people over 18 years of age.

Vaccines have saved many lives this year. A study carried out by the WHO office in Europe and the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) estimated last November that vaccines in Spain

would have prevented the death by Covid of at least 89,515 people over 60 years of age

. Health indicates that, with vaccines, the risk of hospitalization is reduced by 15 times and death by 18 times.

On December 15, the vaccination of children between the ages of five and 11 also started in the different autonomous communities.

In these weeks, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Health, more than 700,000 doses have been inoculated, so the vaccination rate with the first prick

already reaches 20.9% of the 3,349,276 children susceptible to receiving the immunization

At the moment, the only pediatric product authorized in the European Union are the Pfizer / BioNTech vials, which contain a third of the indicated dose in adults and, according to the protocols, must be administered in a regimen of two doses separated by a period of

eight weeks

Since last September, the administration of so-called boosters or third doses is also underway in Spain. This indication, which was also recommended in the first place to elderly and vulnerable people,

has intensified in recent weeks

, due to the increase in the incidence and increase of infections produced by the sixth wave and the arrival of the omicron variant. On December 16, Health decided to expand this vaccination strategy, indicating the booster dose for those over 40 years of age and essential workers, who will progressively receive the third puncture with any of the available products.

Scientific evidence indicates that vaccination regimens do not have to be homologous, but rather that the mixture of products is safe and effective in enhancing the immune response.

Since the indication of the third doses, more than

12 million extra serums

have already been pricked

, so that 85.9% of those over 70 have it, as well as 67.5% of those in their sixties and 57 , 1% of those vaccinated this year with the Jannsen single-dose, for whom an additional prick of a messenger RNA vaccine (Pfizer / BioNTech or Moderna) is prescribed, reports Efe.

19.7% of citizens between 50 and 59 years old already have a reinforcement puncture, as well as 12.6% of people between the ages of 40 and 49.
