Last year, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare found that the number of cases of abuse at home by the elderly was more than 17,000, the highest since we started collecting statistics.

It is believed that one of the factors is that the burden of long-term care for family members has increased as the spread of the new coronavirus has demanded refraining from going out.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare is investigating the abuse of elderly people in their homes and facilities through local governments nationwide.

Last year, the number of abuses that occurred at home was 17,281, an increase of 353 from the previous year, the highest number since 2006 when statistics were first collected.

Twenty-five elderly people died from abuse, up from the previous year by 10.

The most abused were

▽ sons (39.9%),

▽ husbands (22.4%),

▽ daughters (17.8%),

and the factors analyzed by the local government were

▽ "based on the personality and personality of the abused person". (57.9%), but

▽ "long-term care fatigue, long-term care stress" was also conspicuous.

(50%) According to the

Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, one of the factors is that the spread of the new coronavirus has increased the burden of family care by refraining from using day services and closing local gatherings. It means that it can be considered as one.

On the other hand, the number of abuses received from staff such as long-term care facilities decreased to 595 for the first time.

The number of reports from family members and relatives decreased by 5 points from the previous year, and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare analyzes that the background is that visits were restricted to prevent infection and it became difficult to understand the inside of the facility.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare hopes to support the resumption of visits and exchanges at the facility, which will help prevent abuse.
