The drop comes after a record rise.

The Covid-19 contaminations observed in the past 24 hours have experienced a significant drop with nearly 28,000 new cases against more than 100,000 the day before, Christmas Day.

A peak never reached so far in France.

According to figures published Sunday evening by Public Health France, 27,697 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in twenty-four hours.

A much lower level than the previous days, linked to the closure of a very large number of pharmacies and test centers on Christmas Day.

Pressure increases on the hospital

On Saturday, France crossed the 100.00 case mark under the effect of the intensifying fifth wave, carried by the much more contagious Omicron variant. Unheard of in two years of health crisis. Over the past seven days, the average number of cases stood at 70,000. Pressure also continues to mount on critical care services which have 3,299 patients against 3,282 on Saturday, with 93 new admissions.

Same surge in terms of hospitalizations with 16,365 people currently hospitalized against 16,162 the day before, or 506 new admissions.

The number of deaths since the start of the epidemic has reached 122,642, 96 more than the day before.

Faced with the acceleration of health degradation, President Emmanuel Macron will hold by videoconference a Health Defense Council dedicated to Covid-19 at 4:00 p.m., one hour before the Council of Ministers which must adopt the bill establishing the vaccination pass.

A "reassessment" scheduled for Monday

Initially scheduled for entry into force at the end of January, this text will be examined in committee at the National Assembly from Wednesday, before going to the Senate from January 5.

On the health situation, government spokesman Gabriel Attal had specified that a "reassessment" was scheduled for Monday, while Omicron will undoubtedly become the majority in France this week.

Since the start of the vaccination campaign in France, more than 52.7 million people have received at least one injection (i.e. 78.2% of the total population) and 51,611,033 people now have a complete vaccination schedule (i.e. 76 , 5% of the total population).

And since the start of the booster campaign, 22,002,825 people have received an additional dose.
