Five years after pediatric cancer patients and cancer patients in their late teens to thirties, called the "AYA generation," based on data from people diagnosed with cancer at major cancer hospitals nationwide. The National Cancer Center has announced the results of the first tabulation of survival rates by cancer type.

For example, the 5-year survival rate for childhood cancer patients with leukemia was 88.0%, which was higher than the data for patients of all ages, but experts say that they need to look at the longer-term course.

The National Cancer Center has established that among those diagnosed with cancer at cancer base hospitals nationwide during the two years up to 2014, patients aged 0 to 14 and "AYA generation" aged 15 to 39. For the first time, we analyzed the survival rate after 5 years for each type of cancer.

As a result, the survival rate of childhood cancer after 5 years is ▼ brain tumor 74.6%, ▼ leukemia 88.0%, ▼ germ cell tumor 96.6%, etc.

Among the cancers of the AYA generation, ▼ breast cancer is 90.0%, ▼ uterine cancer is 89.0%, and ▼ brain tumor and spinal cord tumor are 84.3%.

On the other hand, analysis of data from more than 870,000 people of all ages showed an overall survival rate of 67.5% after 5 years.

The National Cancer Center says that survival rate data is only a tendency and does not directly apply to each patient, and we would like it to be used as a reference when discussing treatment policies with the attending physician.

Koichi Matsumoto, director of the National Center for Child Health and Development, who cooperated with the survey, said, "The cancer survival rate of the younger generation is higher than that of all age groups. Many cancer patients have problems such as various complications for a long time after treatment, so we need to investigate the longer-term course, such as 10 or 20 years from now. "

"Survival survival rate" for the first time

In this tabulation, the survival rate of people who have been diagnosed for cancer for the first time is summarized as "survival survival rate" for the first time, and even for cancers with low survival rate, those who have survived treatment It was found that the survival rate after that tended to increase.

The survival rate from the time of diagnosis, which has been reported so far, may be low due to difficulty in early detection and treatment depending on the type of cancer, while the survival rate of people who have been diagnosed for many years tends to be high. Therefore, the National Cancer Center analyzed the survival rate from 1 year to 4 years after the diagnosis for the first time, thinking that it may lead to the hope of the patient to live.

According to this, for example, in the case of non-small cell lung cancer, the survival rate of people diagnosed in the two years up to 2014 is 73.7% 1 year after diagnosis, 54.8% 3 years later, and 5 years later. It was 47.7%, which was lower with each passing year.

On the other hand, ▼ the survival rate one year after the diagnosis is 83.4%, ▼ 89.1% from the time two years after the diagnosis, ▼ 92.5% from the time three years after the diagnosis, ▼ 4 From a year later, it was 94.1%, and the survival rate one year later increased as the years passed from the diagnosis.

Similar trends were seen in pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, and gallbladder cancer, which are difficult to detect early.

Ayako Okuyama, director of the National Cancer Center Hospital Cancer Registration Analysis Office, said, "Even if the cancer is intractable, those who survive the treatment tend to be more likely to survive for a long time. I think it is data that will give hope to the patients who are facing each other. "
