The famous bouillon cube, which enhances the taste of dishes, was recently the subject of a survey by the 60 million consumers association.
A total of 34 references were screened.
Among them were those of well-known brands like Knorr or Maggi, reports
Midi Libre on
Tuesday.
Several criteria were studied: the salt and sugar content and the presence of additives such as flavor enhancers, colorings and other thickeners.
Thus, according to the results of this study, these food cubes contain too much salt, too much sugar and too many food additives.
The association also specifies that products displaying "salt-free" still contain it.
In addition, it detected the presence of palm oil in five types of broth, including one with the organic label.
Watch out for packaging information
"With a coloring (ordinary caramel) as the only additive, vegetable broths win the prize for sobriety (...) On the other hand, there are up to four additives in poultry broths from the Auchan, Knorr and Dilecta brands", writes 60 million consumers.
It would therefore be preferable to use vegetable broths instead.
As for allergens, the result is not more reassuring.
Some bouillon cubes could contain up to seven, the study said.
The association also recommends keeping a distance from certain information displayed on packaging, such as "defatted" or "low fat".
According to her, this information is "more than questionable" or "on the verge of deception".
