December 21 is the winter solstice solar term, and the northern hemisphere ushered in the shortest day of the year and the longest night of the year.

As the place with the highest latitude in China, residents of Mohe City, Daxinganling, Heilongjiang Province, the "Shenzhou Arctic" greeted the 17-hour night with unique local traditional folk customs.

On the morning of the 21st, many Mohe people walked out of their homes wearing festive costumes, singing and dancing in the ice and snow, and greeted the arrival of the winter solstice through traditional folk dances.

As a tradition, on the day of the winter solstice, Mohe people will bring ice-cutting tools to the source of the frozen Heilongjiang, pick up crystal clear ice cubes, and then melt the ice into water on an outdoor rack, cook dumplings, and stew fresh fish.

The locals say this is a tradition for them to welcome the "winter solstice", taking the source ice and turning the source water. In this special solar term, they seek the roots, be grateful for nature, and wish that the weather will be smooth in the coming year and their lives will get better and better.
