Wine is fattening, yes, but some are much more fattening than others.

Neither any wine with bubbles is champagne nor is cava the only sparkling wine produced in Spain.
Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Seco, Semiseco
, the terminology can confuse and alienate those who just want to enjoy a drink. Elegant and festive by nature,
sparkling wines
, synonymous with luxury and relegated for years to celebratory toasts and desserts,
pair perfectly
with any meal, dinner or aperitif. And the best thing is that some of the best in the world are national and are available to
almost any pocket.
But how do you choose the right one for the holidays?
Classified
by
color
- there are white, pink and some red -,
method of preparation
and
amount of residual sugar,
it is best to choose the bottle depending on the dish it will accompany. The sweetest are the
Semidry
, which contain between 32 and 50 grams of sugar per liter, followed by the
Dry
and the
Extra Dry.
Therefore, a semi-dry will always improve a chocolate cake.
For seafood or rice
, on the other hand,
the Brut
are
fabulous
, with less than 15 grams of sugar per liter, or the
Extra Brut,
with less than six.
Recently, and after analyzing 24 brands (
8 Brut nature, 13 Brut and 3 semi-dry),
the
Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU)
has published the results of its comparison
of supermarket cavas.
The 'winners' turned out to be
Faustino Brut Reserva,
which can be found in supermarkets for a price of
7.50 euros,
and
Vía de la Plata Brut Nature,
which is around
5.95 euros.
Ondarre Brut Nature
and
Anna de Codorniu 1551 Brut
also obtained good results
.
The
Cordon Negro Brut Magnum from Freixenet
is a magnificent alternative for the first course.
This has been decreed by the jury of the international Champagne Sparkling Wine World Championship contest, awarding the gold medal to the best Spanish sparkling wine.
Light and fresh, this fruity cava from one of the most internationally recognized brands enters effortlessly.
The same awards have recognized other sparkling wines from the
DO Cava such
as
Gramona 2015 Imperial
and the
Vilarnau NV Vilarnau Rosé Delicat Brut Reserva Organic,
all for less than 20 euros a bottle.
And although the production of the DO Cava is the largest, extraordinary sparkling wines are also made in other regions.
