After the stepfather's murder of little Leonie from Torgelow, the six-year-old girl's mother was also sentenced to prison.

The district court of Neubrandenburg found the 27-year-old woman guilty of negligent homicide by omission on Tuesday and imposed a sentence of two years in prison.

The sentence was not suspended, a spokeswoman for the court said.

The court considered it proven that the mother found her seriously injured daughter in her apartment after returning from shopping in January 2019 and did not seek help.

She had several options for doing this, even if her partner at the time was putting pressure on her.

Stepfather Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

While the mother was not at home, the stepfather had abused Leonie badly because she had disobeyed him.

He only alerted an emergency doctor when the child could no longer be saved.

The now 30-year-old former partner was therefore sentenced to life imprisonment by the Neubrandenburg district court in 2020 for murder through omission and mistreatment of those under protection.

In court he had claimed that Leonie had sustained the injuries when falling down stairs.

The Neubrandenburg District Court now came to the conclusion that the mother did not react appropriately to the girl's condition after she had returned to the apartment.

With the sentence, the judges went beyond the request of the public prosecutor, who had asked for two years probation.

Leonie's father had applied for three years 'imprisonment through his lawyer as a co-plaintiff, and the defendants' defense counsel an acquittal.
