• The heroes of the "Matrix" saga return in numbers for this fourth part and get lost again between real and virtual worlds.

  • “Matrix Resurrections” does not lack assets, in particular breathtaking scenes, but plays a little too much the card of nostalgia and self-reliance.

They are back. Neo, Trinity and Morpheus took almost twenty years to reinvent themselves for

Matrix Resurrections

, directed solo by Lana Wachowski. Some have aged well (Keanu Reeves and Carie-Anne Moss). Others less (Jada Pinkett-Smith with surprising makeup). Others have been replaced (Laurence Fishburne took the features of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and some are arriving as reinforcements (Cuckoo Neil Patrick Harris!).

"The trilogy is about very beautiful romantic relationships, about the struggle of the human being and about the meaning of our life", explains Lana Wachowski in a note of intention.

This is what the director wanted to infuse into this fourth part which evolves between virtual and real world by leading the spectator in its wake.

This trip is in the image of the film which tries to clear a path between references and novelty, as the big Hollywood productions seem to be doing more and more.

A matter of capsules

In 1999,

Matrix

was a narrative and aesthetic shock, notably with the spectacular “bullet time” effect which hypnotically slows down the action. The other two sections (released in 2003), more outrageous, have won less support. In 2021, the saga was copied and parodied a lot so that the element of surprise disappeared, giving way to the pleasure of finding the heroes for new adventures. Lana Wachowski has taken this into account. She transforms her hero into a video game creator, author of a

Matrix

saga

not well in her head and her celebrity, who questions the relevance of launching a new component but is forced to do so by greedy financiers.

There is no need to divulge the rest of the plot to suspect that the protagonists will be faced with the choice of the red or blue capsule and get lost in the Matrix to the point of becoming zinzin.

If you do not understand this sentence, you have hit upon the problem with the film: you must already be familiar with the

Matrix

saga

- or at least with the first part - to follow.

Of (too) many extracts from other films is not really enough to navigate.

Of action and nostalgia

A few breathtaking scenes (she really knows how to do it, Lana), a dose of self-mockery and a nice romantic subtext make it indulgent for the whole despite a few drops in pace - two and a half hours is not reasonable! - and a certain moment of really collector's cabotinage of a French actor who seems to have exploded in flight…

Matrix Resurrections

works mainly on nostalgia which constitutes as much its charm as its limits.
