• On January 20, agents of the State, the city, associations and volunteers will identify the number of homeless people in Marseille, during a "night of solidarity".

  • The city counts on 1,500 volunteers and launches an appeal.

  • This should make it possible to better orient public policies.

“How many [homeless people] are there exactly in Marseille? Nobody can answer this question ”, introduces Audrey Garino, deputy mayor in charge of solidarity. On January 20, the services of the State and the municipality should be able to answer this question more precisely. That night, or rather from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., the city of Marseille will take part for the first time in "the night of solidarity", an operation which aims to record, by traveling the field, as precisely as possible. the number of homeless people.

But to be effective, and if the whole of Marseille's rich associative fabric, the city is counting on the mobilization of 1,500 volunteers, and is launching an appeal. Divided into groups, they will each be supervised by a professional, from the Samu social, a municipal entity in Marseille, or associations. Firefighters and night staff of the municipal police will also be engaged.

“This operation has an eminently pragmatic aim,” continues Audrey Garino.

For example, we are seeing an increase in the number of elderly people on the streets, but does this hold true in the numbers?

"For an effective census, the" investigators "will be provided with a fairly brief questionnaire: age, sex, origin, situation, life course.

This in order to provide the most appropriate response possible.

"When Paris embarked on this project in 2018, the City saw that the number of women in the street was greater than thought and therefore opened an emergency accommodation center reserved for women", gives for example the chosen one.

Better orient public policies

For the time being, the town hall estimates the number of homeless people in Marseille at 14,000. A figure put forward on the basis of the number of people using 115 at least once a year, but which is not sufficient to describe the reality. Of course, the “count” carried out on January 20 will be coupled with the figures for the number of people currently in emergency accommodation, around 4,500, plus those of the reception centers for asylum seekers (CADA). “In the following years, we will integrate the inhabitants of the camps and the slums into our study,” explains Audrey Garino. This year, the State services are also mobilized and it provides, in addition to human and logistical support, an envelope of 10,000 euros, specifies Marie Aubert, sub-prefect for equal opportunities.

This night of solidarity will make it possible to "better understand in order to act better", concludes Audrey Garino.

This "will give an instant T, but its repetition over time will give us a measure of the evolution to guide public policies".

The results of this census will be known a few weeks after January 20.
